The  “Salute to Secretariat’ Day at the Virginia State Fair is Friday Sept. 27, beginning at 10 am when the Fair opens.   It will take place on the north side of the Fairgrounds in the “Harvest Landing” section.  This is where the original yearling and stallion barns built in the 1930s are located.  Two descendants of Secretariat:  Covert Action, a grandson, and Multiple Choice, a great-grandson, will be on display near the barns.  They are both retired racehorses who  live at the local Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation Farm at James River.

Leeanne Meadows Ladin, author of “Secretariat’s Meadow – The Land, The Family, The Legend”  and equine director for Meadow Event Park,  will  sign books and give informal talks at the barns throughout the day. There  will be a selection of Secretariat-themed merchandise available for purchase, including books, posters, t-shirts and souvenirs made with original Meadow fence board.

Secretariat won the 1973 Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing, the only champion to break each track record in the series;  the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont.  He was born at The Meadow on March 30, 1970 and was raised and first trained there.

The Virginia State Fair runs from Sept. 27 – Oct. 6, 2013. Go to www.statefairva.org for fair information, schedule and tickets. For information about the equine events at this year’s fair, read this post
