HT-40The Fifth Annual Susan G. Komen Central Virginia Ride for the Cure will be held September 21 at Locust Hill Preserve in Culpeper, Virginia. Travel through beautiful Bull Run Hunt countryside during the ride and end the day with dining, dancing, and a silent auction.

This year’s event is sponsored by United Country Piedmont Real Estate, Capital Party Rentals, Old Waterloo Equine Clinic, Squeaky Pig BBQ, Mike and Betty Long of Locust Hill Preserve, the Bull Run Hunt, and Dover Saddlery. The past four years have raised more than $500,000 total for education, screening, treatment, and awareness campaigns in Virginia.

Several options for participation are offered: register as a rider; a “ghost rider,” for those who will not be able to ride; or donate to one of the riders or to the general event fund. Although there is no registration fee for the event, riders must raise a minimum of $250.

Riders can choose a specific group with which to ride. Each group will be led by a trail boss, and riders will be asked to stay with their specific group (outriders or sweep riders will assist riders needing to switch groups). There are six trail groups offered: jumping/first flight, with water crossings and jumps; walk/trot/canter (two groups), with water crossings, varying terrain, no jumping; walk/trot (two groups), offering water crossings and varying terrain, no cantering; fast walk/gaited, a fast-paced group with water crossings; walk, a medium-paced walking group with water crossings; and walk/talk, a leisurely paced group covering shorter distances (advisable for slower horses or a ride shorter in length).

Dinner, catered by Squeaky Pig BBQ and Capital Party Rentals, will follow the ride and is free for riders. Tickets are available for nonriders ($35 per adult, $15 for children 12 years and younger). A silent auction and dancing will be held after dinner.
