The James River Driving Association (JRDA) is a horse and carriage driving club in it’s 30th year with members primarily from Richmond and the surrounding areas of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and North Carolina.
The primary goal of the JRDA is the basic education of existing and potential “whips” (carriage drivers) by introducing safe driving practices, vehicle care and maintenance, and driving techniques. Members are encouraged to utilize the experience and expertise of the active members to learn more about what is involved in driving and to further develop their opinions and preferences before purchasing horses or equipment.
The James River Driving Association is putting on the James River Classic Carriage Driving Pleasure Show at Rose Mount Farm in Spotsylvania, VA on October 25, 2014, starting at 8:30 a.m. There will be horses and ponies in 48 classes including VSEs (very small equine) also known as mini’s.
The James River Driving Association has many events and activities throughout the year and they are posted on the Jamesriverdrivingassociation.com web site. More information on the Pleasure Show is posted on the JRDA website. An active club, some of the activities the club offers are: Introduction to Driving, a clinic designed to show the basics of carriage driving and allow participants the opportunity to take the reins of a driving equine; fun days at different farms which may include driving a dressage test, practicing a cones course or trying your hand at driving hazards, trails and fun games; pleasure drives, where we get together at local parks, farms or plantations; EMT training, introducing emergency personnel to horses and horse trailers; and instructional clinics with world class clinicians.
Members are also active in civil war reinactments. The club also has auctions and seminars throughout the year. JRDA is a social organization of welcoming people and meet for potluck luncheons, pool parties, and Christmas parties.
