2012 Trail Comp winnerOne of the most popular activities to do with a horse is trail riding.  The Great American Trail Horse Sale and Competitions offers a venue for trail riding enthusiasts and folks looking for a good family horse.  There will be horses, mules and ponies of all breeds, and prices for all budgets.  The sale is held on April 5 & 6, at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Va.  This is the 12th year of this unique horse auction that draws spectators, buyers and consignors from all around the country.

The event starts off on Friday, April 5th, at 11:00 am, with trainer and clinician Mary Miller Jordan.  Mary and her mustang “Silver Lining” are the winners of the 2012 Reserve Champion of the Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover, Legends Division.  She and her mustang “Lindsay’s Faith” also won ACTHA’s 2011 “America’s Favorite Trail Horse”.   Mary will give a clinic and also perform on her mustangs under saddle and at liberty.  All clinics and admissions are free.

Jackie Turnbull will give a seminar on “How to Buy the Right Horse for You and Your Family”.  In today’s equine market it is so important to make your dollars work, and purchase a horse that will be the right match for the whole family.  Jackie Turnbull is the owner of Turnbull Equine Productions who puts on The Great American Trail Horse Sale.  She will help you understand what kind of horse will work for your personal needs and how to choose wisely when making the most important decision that will effect the enjoyment of your horse for years to come.

Friday evening starts with a Grand Entry of sale horses followed by the Gaited Horse “Show- Off”.  One of the highlights of the sale is watching horses of all breed’s, compete in a $2,000 Trail Competition.  These will be horses consigned to the sale that will compete over all natural obstacles found on the ranch and trail.  If you attend Friday’s events you are eligible to sign up for a drawing that will select 5 people to ride the top five winning horses from the Trail Competition, including the winner!

Saturday morning at 9:30 am, the top ten horses from the previous night will compete in the finals of the Great American Trail Competition.  The winner will receive $1,000 and a championship buckle award.  The 2nd through 6th place horses will divide $1,000 and prizes.  There will also be a special competition for youth riders with prize awards.   At 12:00 pm, the Horse Sale will begin.  There will be a great variety of horses prices for all budgets.  There will be no horses under 4 years of age, no mares in foal and no stallions.   The Great American Trail Horse Sale offers horses that will suit all disciplines and levels of riding.  Photos and videos of many of the sale horses will be on the website, as will the sale catalog the end of March.  The sale is held at the beautiful Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia.   There will be vendors in attendance who will be selling many products for horse and rider.

Following the sale on Saturday evening will be the Great American Trail Challenge.  This event is open to the public to bring their horses and compete for a buckle and prize money to the winner.  There will be prizes and payback to the next 5 placing horses.  Don’t miss this exciting weekend of events!  There is something for everyone to enjoy.
