The Orange County Parks and Recreation Foundation will be holding their 5th Annual Liberty Ride on September 17, 2016. Starting out at James Madison’s Montpelier, this ride will go through wooded trails and pasture lands. The ride is about 10 miles and will end back at Montpelier for lunch. Riders must provide their own horses and tack.
The Liberty Ride is a fundraiser for the Orange County Parks & Recreation Foundation, a 501(c)3 Organization whose mission is to help support the future of Orange County Parks & Recreation. The ride is organized by Orange County Parks & Recreation and Oakland Heights Farm, hosted by James Madison’s Montpelier, and supported by the Virginia Horse Industry Board and Virginia Horse Council.
Registration is available to print online – please pre-register by September 9, 2016. Cost is $40 and includes a lunch if pre-registered. Anyone who registers after 9/9/16 will be charged $50.
The Liberty Ride will begin this year at James Madison’s Montpelier, located at 11350 Constitution Highway, Montpelier Station, Virginia 22957. The ride still begins at James Madison’s Montpelier, but participants will enter at the main entrance this year. The ride begins promptly at 10am, so it is highly recommended that participants arrive before 9am, though participants are welcome to arrive as early as 8:15am. ANYONE WHO ARRIVES AFTER 9:45AM MAY BE UNABLE TO PARTICIPATE.
The length of the ride is between 7 and 10 miles round-trip (route may change based on weather and trail conditions), and the terrain is pasture land, wooded trails, and gravel roads, so please make sure horses are shod accordingly. We highly recommend that horses are shod, without shoes some horses have experienced fatigue on the gravel roads. This is a group trail ride, there will be a trail master who will lead the ride. This first portion of the ride is optional since it will expose horses to crowds of observers. Lunch will be provided at the end of the ride.
