The 2014 Tournament of Champions Winter Classic will take place this Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the University of Mary Washington’s host farm, Hazelwild Farm, in Fredericksburg, VA. Do you have a high school student with ambitions to ride in college? This is a great opportunity to see 20 IHSA college riding teams from schools around the east coast compete in what is the final show of the Tournament series. The team with the highest total points from two out of the three shows of the series will be awarded the championship at the conclusion of this show on January 25th.

In addition to the regular schedule of classes, a Tournament of Champions Medal Class will be held for outstanding open-skill-level riders who have been nominated by their coaches. It is a two-phase championship – all riders will compete in the flat phase, but no more than half will be called back for the fences phase.

The day will also include an Equestrian Talent Search Medal Class. Top high school riders from around the nation are being invited to compete in a two-phase championship, and Delaware Valley College offers a $8000 scholarship to the winner! All riders will compete in the flat phase, but no more than half will be called back for the fences phase.

This is a fabulous opportunity for college bound high school students to meet IHSA riding coaches. Colleges will have recruiting information available to hand out. The following schools will be competing: Randolph College, Savannah College of Art & Design, Mt Holyoke College, Goucher College, Virginia Intermont College, UMass Amherst, Virginia Tech, University of Delaware, Bridgewater College, St Andrews University, Virginia Tech, Boston University, and Delaware Valley College. (Update Jan. 21, 2014 – Centenary College and West Virginia University will not be attending.)

The judge will be Tom Brennan, who is most recently recognized for riding “Gramercy Park” to the 2012 World Champion Hunter Horse of the Year. The Tournament will begin at 9 am. Hazelwild Farm is located at 5325 Harrison Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22407.
